Medical industry - titanium, niobium, tantalum

Medical industry

Titanium, being the most biocompatible metal, has a broad range of applications in the health care and medical industry. The most viable and important properties include great strength, resistance to corrosion caused by bodily fluids, bio-indifference, high fatigue strength and osseointegration. Titanium alloys in medical sector are used to mainly produce implants and prostheses.

For many years titanium alloy 5ELI (Ti6Al4V with low composition of nitrogen, oxygen and carbon) was considered neutral for biological applications. Over the years and after many researches, scientists decided that vanadium, being a component of this alloy, may have negative impact on health and as a result has been superseded by new alloy formula – Ti6Al7Nb, where vanadium is replaced by niobium.

Considering its properties, tantalum has become more and more popular material in the health care industry. There are properties that add-up to its overall biocompability, and those include: resistance to corrosion caused by biofluids, excellent mechanical properties and hardness. Tantalum is a popular material in knee and hip implants.

Our products are certified and manufactured in accordance with specification for medical applications.
